Ever wondered what it's truly like to face a small fire? It's not just about grabbing the nearest extinguisher and hoping for the best! Knowing how to react effectively can make all the difference in protecting lives and property. That's where a proper fire extinguisher course comes in.
Here at EK Fire Protection, based right here in Kent, we believe that everyone can benefit from understanding the fundamentals of fire safety. Our fire extinguisher training isn't just a tick-box exercise; it's about empowering you with the knowledge and confidence to act decisively if a fire breaks out.
So, what can you actually expect to get stuck into during one of our vital fire safety courses? Let's break it down!
The Basics of Fire
Before you even touch an extinguisher, it’s crucial to understand what you’re up against. Our course kicks off by demystifying fire itself. You'll get to grips with the "fire triangle" – the three elements (heat, fuel and oxygen) needed for a fire to start and continue burning. This foundational knowledge helps you understand how extinguishers work by removing one of these elements.
We’ll also cover the different "classes" of fire. Did you know not all fires are the same? From ordinary combustibles like wood and paper (Class A) to flammable liquids (Class B), electrical fires (Class E), and even cooking oil fires (Class F), each demands a specific approach. Knowing your ABCs (and Ds, Fs and electrical symbols!) of fire classes is paramount to choosing the right tool for the job.
Types of Extinguishers
Our fire extinguisher course will introduce you to the various types of extinguishers you might encounter, whether it's in your workplace or even at home. We'll explore:
Water Extinguishers: Great for Class A fires.
Foam Extinguishers: Versatile for Class A and B fires.
Dry Powder Extinguishers: Multi-purpose for A, B, C and sometimes electrical fires.
CO2 Extinguishers: Perfect for electrical fires and Class B.
Wet Chemical Extinguishers: The go-to for those pesky cooking oil fires (Class F).
You’ll learn how to identify each type by its colour coding and what situations they’re designed for – and equally important, what situations they are not suitable for. Using the wrong extinguisher can be dangerous, so we make sure you're clued up!
The Power of PASS: How to Use an Extinguisher Safely
Practical application is often the most anticipated part of any fire extinguisher training. You’ll be taught the universally recognised P.A.S.S. method:
Pull the pin
Aim the nozzle at the base of the fire
Squeeze the handle
Sweep from side to side
We'll guide you through simulated scenarios, giving you the chance to put theory into practice in a safe, controlled environment. You’ll learn about the correct distance to maintain, how to approach a fire and crucially, when to stop and evacuate. Remember, your safety is always the top priority! We'll also cover the effective use of fire blankets for smaller, contained fires.
